Here is a Process Cheat - As a customer, before stepping into a line, check out the line furthest away from your entry point.  Often times you will find a shorter line.  As a business process owner, find out if this is true and fix it!

This happens when people are funneled from one direction. They often just go to the first line they see. Then followers simply join the line leaving farther away lines shorter.

Airport security lines

This airport ensures people come from multiple directions.  As a result, they are automatically presented different lines and from above others have an overview of all lines.  This creates the opportunity for customers to self-balance the workload across all the lines.

Workload balancing is important at the entry point as well as within the process. It improves the throughput of a process - which makes customers and the business happier by delivering value quicker.

Your assignment this week: Find a point in your process where the workload is not balanced and fix it.

That's my 8020 Framework.
